book preview (part 2)
Below is a preview of the third and fourth sections of this book.
3. Is this a ‘common problem’?
Sexual attraction to children, according to what I have seen and researched, affects a fair proportion of adult men. I remember reading an article on the internet years back that stated, as a fact, that it affects about one in three men but I did not keep a record of it at the time. However, I did read an incredible and highly recommended book on the subject by Sarah D. Goode entitled Understanding and Addressing Adult Sexual Attraction to Children: a Study of Paedophiles in Contemporary Society (the version I read was published by Routledge in 2009). In this book, Goode conducted thorough interviews of 56 self-defined child lovers from all over the world. Only one of them was in prison but there were others who had been convicted and put on some form of probation. She initially wanted to interview 200 child lovers but once her research began she received so much discrimination for the project that it took well over a year to gather her data and it ended up coming from a much smaller sample of people, unfortunately. Nonetheless, her research and writing are very sound and, in my opinion, makes a huge contribution to this field, which is already starved of research and theory. In her book, she states that about 20% of men...
4. Why am I like this?
Goode, in her book mentioned in the previous section, referred to a theory that people are born with a sexual attraction to children instead of developing it at some point in life. From what I have read and heard I would say, without any hesitation, that it can work both ways. There are many accounts of adult males becoming sexually attracted to children after they were sexually abused as children. Then there those, such as myself, who was suddenly burdened with the attraction at age 14 with no previous sexual abuse. Children learn and inherit the traits of the adults around them, especially those close to them. It is fairly straightforward to see how a child that has been sexually abused can turn into an adult who is sexually attracted to children because of what those experiences instilled into his or her mind and how it negatively affected their sexual development, putting it on an undesirable path. However, where does the sexual attraction come from in cases when there has been little or no sexual abuse? My own theories and research on this are detailed below.
I have thought, read and observed a lot in relation to why adult males would ever be sexually attracted to children. One thing you may have noticed so far in this book is the frequency of my referring to a child lover as an “adult male”. While there have been female child lovers, the vast majority appears to be male. Why is this? I honestly believe the answer is simple and it has hit me time and time again. Fundamentally, adult men are supposed to be attracted to adult women while adult women are supposed to be attracted to adult men. Usually, it is men who...
